There are several sights to see in this area, which is located just north of the Farafra Oasis town in the Western Desert region and is easily accessible for all guided trips into this region.

What to expect to see:

To view the desert in all its glory, one needs to go a considerable distance away from the main route.

It seems as if the weathered chalk mounds are decorated with pavlova cakes, ice cream cones, and icing pools.

One may find themselves skimming over a snow-swept glacier or navigating their way through a labyrinth of peppermint drops.

Aesthetic features of Farafra’s White Desert include spectacular formations that have formed as a consequence of millions of years of erosion of chalk caused by wind and sand driven in from the Great Sand Sea.

Come face to face with the Khoman chalk ridges, which were formed by marine organisms depositing their detritus on the bed of a large ancient sea.

A comparable but more white, chalky limestone is the source of the ice-white bricks that are utilized throughout the Western Desert, from north to south, as a construction material for buildings that will endure just a fraction of the eons that it took for the stone to be shaped and formed.

A pink crust develops over the top of the chalk due to the presence of a layer of tougher limestone originating from the later Eocene epoch.

The White Desert is best appreciated at dusk and morning when the dramatic theatre left by an ancient ocean is at its most spectacular.

Whatever mode of transportation is used to see it, the beautiful curves of this pale terrain, which at times appears to be a field of snow and at others to be a gigantic ice-cream parlor, are a memorable sight in one of the most stunning of all deserts.
