In ancient Arabic, Essam Azzam street is referred to as ‘Sharia al-Muizz li-Deen Illah’ and is roughly one kilometer long.

It is one of the oldest streets in Cairo, Egypt, and is approximately one kilometer long.

According to a United Nations survey, it has the highest concentration of medieval architectural assets in the Islamic world, making it the most visited destination in the world.

Location:

It is located 30 minutes from downtown Cairo and in the center of the Old Islamic Cairo neighborhood. It is one of the most famous historical places in Egypt for those interested in the progress of Islam.

History:

Located in the northern part of the city, the street of Al Muizz connects to Bab Zuweila in the southern part of the city.

Al-Muizz Street was designated as a pedestrian-only zone between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on April 24, 2008, resulting in what is now known as an “open-air museum.” The order was issued on April 24, 2008.
In the vicinity of Midan El-Hussein, Al Muizz Street crosses the Muski 200 meters west of the mosque, at a junction with two mosques.

As one travels north from the Goldsmiths Bazaar, the abundance of jewelry stores quickly gives way to merchants of posts, basins, and finials with crescent tops, for whom this section of the street is known as Al-Nahaseen, the Coppersmiths Bazaar, which is a common nickname for this area.

At one time, this Bazaar was a wide avenue that ended in a large parade field between two caliphal palaces, thus the name Bayn al Qasrayn (Between the Two Palaces), which is still in use today even though all vestiges of the palaces have long since been destroyed.

More recently, the street has been given the title of the first book of Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy, where it is commonly translated as ‘Palace walk,’ a reference to the street’s historical significance.
