Attractions in the area and the region’s geography
Wadi Rayan is a distinct depression located 15 kilometers west of the Oasis that has been transformed into a man-made animal sanctuary and scenic location.
While the concept of piping surplus water from the Fayoum into the wadi was initially proposed by the British in the 19th century, it wasn’t implemented until 1966.
As a result, three lakes and a cascade were built, and the region became a key breeding place for birds.
Currently, it is a nature reserve, home to the world’s only known population of slender horned gazelles, eight other species of mammals, thirteen different resident bird species, and 26 different migrant and vagrant bird species, not to mention the unique fossils found in the Valley of The Whales, further into the desert, which is a zone that has been designated as a special protection zone.
