Location:
It is conveniently located around 30 minutes from downtown and in the districts of Khan Khalili and Old Cairo, making it readily accessible for independent travelers and tour groups.
History:
Because the Al Hussein Mosque has a rich historical legacy that includes an authentic copy of the Holy Qu’ran, it is often visited by dignitaries who come to worship there on significant occasions. Hussien’s head is guarded by the interior’s cool marble, green, and silver colors.
Hussein, the Prophet Muhammed’s grandson, was assassinated in Iraq in 680 by the Umayyads, who had previously been accepted as Muhammed’s heirs, despite the claims of Ali, Hussein’s father, who claimed to be Muhammed’s son-in-law.
This generational fight for control of the caliphate resulted in a long-lasting division within Islam.
The Sunni (‘followers of the path’) majority in the Muslim world not only acknowledged the Umayyad caliphate, but they also barred anybody descended from Ali from holding the post.
However, the Shia (‘partisans of Ali’) minority, on the other hand, refused to recognize any leader other than a descendant of Ali and honored Hussein as a martyr, as opposed to the majority. Hussein is recognized as a famous Saint in Egypt, even though the country’s Muslim population is virtually entirely Sunni.
In terms of popularity, he is second only to Saiyida Zeinab, the Prophet’s granddaughter.
The big decorative gigantic umbrellas in front of the Mosque, which are put there for various reasons, are another highly intriguing visual feature of the area in front of the mosque.
First and foremost, it serves to protect Muslims who worship outside the Mosque during the brutally hot summer days and provide shelter when the seasons periodically bring severe rains.
According to the manufacturer, these umbrellas, which are controlled electronically, are reported to be based on the design of several mosques in Saudi Arabia.
