Location:

A Felucca trip by local boat from the Corniche in Aswan and a three-hour drive from Luxor City is required, with the alternative of flying from Cairo to Aswan in around one hour and fifteen minutes.

History:

Kitchener’s Island, also known as the Island of Plants (Geziret an-Nabatat), is a small island off the coast of Egypt’s southernmost city of Aswan on the Nile River.

In appreciation for his military service in Sudan, Consul-General Kitchener used the island to indulge his love for exotic flora, bringing shrubs and seeds from as far away as India and Malaysia to cultivate his collection of rare plants and flowers.

It is a beautiful area to spend a peaceful day (except on Fridays) today, with a diverse array of birds to see.

The island may be reached by rowing boat or felucca from either the west bank or the Elephantine peninsula.

From Felucca, the rugged strait between Elephantine and Amun island seems at its most spectacular.

The nearby coves are frequented by young men who would gladly take you sailing to any of the islands or the West Bank if you don’t already have a boat of your own.
